Elevations: Informations Dump (What is this comic thing?)
One month to go, and given how close to we are to release as well as me finally gathering enough materials to work with sanely, I figured it'd be best to finally fully announce this little project of mine that I won't expect much out of: CanisVulpes Elevations.
This is webcomic project 2-3 years in the making with a story planned to last for at least a year (and many more to come, depending thereafter), so believe me, being able to finally announce this (and likely even more when the web launch happens) makes me filled with personal glee.
The current storyline (codenamed Elias-Sutro), thus far centers around Terrance Coda, a young, bright-eyed husky whose curiosity winds up getting himself and others involved in an adventure that would change everyone's lives forever.
I originally planned for this to be a published series, but at last minute (read: past summer) switched to web release (go you guys, y'all now be able to read this for free). That said, the series itself will still be separated into four volumes (or 'Acts'), roughly four chapters in length.
Each act is planned to be roughly 4-5 chapters in length with a release schedule initially starting at thrice a week (MWF) then moving to Mon-Fri once workload eases and buffer of pages are built up.
In order to maintain being a human and allow time to catch up, there will be a one-week break between chapters, and one month break between acts. This leaves a tentative release schedule as follows:
* Act One: Commencation (October 19)
* Act Two: Escalation (April 2016)
* Act Three: Desolation (Summer 2016)
* Act Four: Vindication (Fall 2016)
On top of a regular comic release schedule, every week or so (aiming for Thursday), I'll add a post on the Marflelog detailing extra information, trivia, details about the comic and work that went into thereof (tentatively titled Elevations: Connection), possibly relevant to the pages posted that week (because holy marf there is a lot that went into the (pre)production of this), as well as a tumblr "Omnibus" every other week/five pages for those who would rather read an compiled version as opposed to one page at a time.
Yeah, it's ambitious, but holy marf will this be fun to make! This is a story I've been working on for quite some time and am so looking forward to telling. Hopefully by the end of Act 2 you'll come to enjoy this as much as I did making it.
The website itself has yet to be set up (a major reason for the delay in release among other things), but I plan on having that taken care of this weekend, with the site itself announced when it's more/less pretty (hopefully BEFORE October 19).
That said, expect more art as well over time, especially as the release date gets closer (granted, of course, on my own well being).
Anywho, this is getting all wall of text and odds are likely I'm missing out important information (whether by intent or not), but I'll likely include at a later date.
If you've read this way through, I commend you! Looking forward to having you read come October. Until then...
Hasta Marfle!

September
2/3 done with month, 1/2 done with decade. Time flies.
Comic progressing at faster pace and should be ready by late September/EarlyOctober (yay schedule slip for quality). I really want to reveal more on this and been meaning to, but holding back until I have sizeable content (read: website) up and running. Do expect much more content this month as I get things ready compared to the silence of August (if anything, I put blame on erratic progress to mythical magical horses).
I start interning come next week (what is time management) that will take up much of the week (what is time management) and oh boy does the time fly on that (what is time management). Also been up and down on things... calling it the 'Valleydog' dilemma, which I'll probably flesh out on a later post as it seems to be more personal than anything and irrelevant to art (tl;dr ideas and pace of working to express such end up with a lead time of 3+ years and a chance of becoming irrelevant... or just me overthinking). If anything, more creative inspiration.
I just wish I could be dedicated, motivated, and draw a lot faster, free of distraction and worry. Time ticks, and things change...or not...but ever subtly. Maybe its the disillusionment that comes from early morning wakefulness.
La vie est drole!

August
For all intents and purposes of the glorious logic bomb that is Marfletime I'm preemptively deeming it August.
July was a quick month, an odd month, but I actually got things started. Feels good to have a sense of productivity without knowing the return, but all in genuine passion and good fun (seriously, I haven't been this legitimately pumped for a project in a long time, now to get enough material in beforehand).
This/last month did bring in a 'case of the feels', so to speak that I did not expect. But everything is temporary, and learning to appreciate what I have in the present to not take as granted as I have in the past. Nothing is permanent, especially in an environment of uncertain, often frequent change that goes against the mere concept of stability. A new stage of my life will begin in one month's time that I never planned for when moving three years ago. Hell, even now I feel different than how I was back then, yet still similar with having inherent flaws of past biting my tail through the marfs.
It's weird. Life is weird. Marfing is weird.
But anywho, new comic Elevations slated to launch in late September. The pages are in the making (and some of you have been sent the first page as preview; I'm impressed with your thoughts on the style and all), and I should have the first chapter at minimum ready by then. Do expect to see more material, images, promos, and journal posts as time goes on. I'm sparing nothing that doesn't slip my mind with this tiny little comic project :)
Hasta Marfle!

Time and Thoughts Thereof
It's 4am and this is nonsensical banter of thoughts.
Time is my enemy, or something like that. It's like a creature I've continuously failed to master. I think of the possibility of things to come, the dreams of what I ideally wish something would play out, and ever hoping that they will happen.
It's a good motivator. I mean, when times are tough, I end up slipping away and pondering very hypothetical future scenarios. I'm a big dreamer, I love imagining how things can turn out in the best possible way, as well as the consequences thereof that could arise. I enjoy looking at every possible outcome as a way to see if I can achieve that dream (or continue dreaming because happy folf is lazy and often forgets to turn "dreaming" into "doing"; part of the reason why it takes me so long to actually get a project done is how long I stay brainstorming before I actually make the effort into paper... it ain't perfect enough dammit!).
Naturally the future itself for a brief moment slips into the present before sliding into the past. Moments and opportunities missed, things that could've been done differently, and ever so fond memories that do bring a smile. That, and suddenly you blink your eye and an hour/week/month has passed and you're still in the planning stage.
For the past year or so... I felt different. Much different than last year. Though I guess it's par for the course each year. I mean, we all are different from ourselves every subsequent year. No circle around the sun is the same. And yet, halfway (which I predictably still can't believe), I can sense change coming. Many things that I have found normal in the past and to a point now will, however subtle, no longer apply as a status quo, be relevant let alone around. I have to change with this or otherwise be left stagnant.
The one thing that came to mind with this in mind, couldn't be more prevalent than in my random travels (now becoming "research trips" for Elevations... more on this in a series of future posts). The more I visit places like San Francisco, the more I feel a sense of the past. It's just not the same as it was beforehand; like any of the experiences I enjoyed are fleeting and will never happen again. And no, I'm not talking about the pricing out and gentrification issue in the city as much as I am the very figurative sense of the word. Many of those locales I know are bound to stay, but the experiences and the people I've spent there have become so ingrained personally with that location that I just can't go without picturing them, and the odds of things like that happening again are increasingly slim. What I once imagined that could be a delightful future is now relegated to the past.
Friends I have made at one point or recently are or will be moving on either figuratively or literally (either way most cases outside my control and I can totally understand their motives). This said, so must I too. I can't stay stagnant. I cannot do careless trips up to the city as much as I did in the first year I moved to the Bay. I can't (and really have no longer have as much the care to) prioritize social life with random animal people because it's a furry event. I cannot feign agreement just to be friends with someone who I think is cool but highly disagree with. I need to fine tune my circle, to one I have my life ahead of me, and I need to focus on the future. A vague future, one not as clear as the dreamer in me had three years ago (hell, even me moving period was all because of a dream vs reality).
I do admit though, I am glad for the friends I have met, the true friends that have stuck by me and were there when I needed. The fleeting feeling, though, still remains. It is probably just a weird coincidence, but usually when I do get involved in something or someone is usually with the "fleeting" take place. It's at most a year, at least a month after moving getting into anything/one that they usually either end, close, lose interest, turn to crap, or move away. It kinda makes me give up on making the effort unless I know that the time spent will be worth it.
On the flip side, how will I know things will be worth it if I don't try? Consequently, if I feel it worth the effort, an internal urge arises to want me to spend as much time (coming from someone who highly favors human interaction over text on a screen) with something/someone as much as I can before the aforementioned happens or try to prevent such, conversely causing such.
Not one word of motivation changes things, seldom one line of reassurance from a best friend; this mentality seeps its way back onto me. I guess it's anxiety/abandonment issues? Kinda freaks me out. Hell, I know I'd be creeped out by myself.
On different note, I'm typing this in a solo bedroom. The thought of which I never would've thought would drastically affect me as of late. I used to think I was above settling into a relationship, that I'm better off single and should focus on getting my own life settled before worrying about someone else. But just having someone by my side, someone to wake up to each day and fall asleep to each night. Someone I could constantly talk to and vice versa about anything. The trust of such a connection, that kind ofcompanionship is a very compelling thought that has become ever more compelling as of late.
I have had those who have had made the move on me, to very mixed results of which I will not dwell upon. Likewise, I have had quite a few people I've looked up to and wanted to get to know and be more involved with. In simpler English, I crush heavily on those I respect that I can connect well with, am already friends, and share some sort of appreciation.
That said, having me admit and spit it out has proven neigh impossible because, for one thing... I am a quiet as marf person who kinda expects others to have a hunch if they are affectionate as is and for them to make the call, plus a fear of rejection ruining a friendship altogether however unlikely, and while it is fun to imagine, I can't really see any true committed relationship in the traditional sense. More like something more than best friends, but not quite to the level of the aforementioned? I've been trying to think of a fitting word, and "companion" (I blame Doctor Who) makes the most sense. I can't help but think of those future plans, and places to go without imagining certain people with me and it's honestly freaking me out as this has never happened before. Like I want to, if not my life, spend some significant amount of time with some folks, this probably again calls back to the fleeting mentality, I would assume. But just the thought makes me smile.
Anywho, the sun rises in an hour, and already the slump of which these thoughts brought me in. Odds are likely that hours later I would find a way to better articulate these paragraphs, and/or regret writing them in the first place. I should probably resume work on Elevations soon, probably after coffee and breakfast.
Thanks for taking the time to read this ramble.

Little Biggy Debriefing
A weekend convention went by in the blink of an eye (and one that has
honestly felt very much different than the past years). It was good, and
quite honestly nothing too eventful to debrief day by day in full essay
fashion (seriously, I don't think I've ever done this since the
first...maybe?).
Okay, so this did turn out into an essay. I began typing this on the day of, semi-fresh-from-the-con, and it's still somewhat surreal knowing that I was in a Nevada casino surrounded by animals just little over 36 hours before and even then last morning.
I'm, like, running on a mix of PCD and happy, nostalgic wags (and no con crud, yay?).
First off, I had no doubts on BLFC pulling off their theme (and was curiously anxious with how they'd do so), and boy did they raise the bar this year (granted, participation from the attendees... and holy marf there's far too many). There was seriously much fun had (I mean, quelling drama llama, however brief), the severe amount of propoganda, the PA announcements (which I believe much more cons should do), and the inevitable resistance/choppy censorship (go resistance)... it just played off ever so well. So much so that I'm looking forward to playing out the follow-up next year (if that is, indeed the actual theme; the con has been silent on next year's full details).
Second, I began to notice how... derpy it was to coordinate things with furs (or rather, my own personal shyness... at a dogmarfing furry convention, getting the better of me). I recall walking back and forth between the two halls (holy marf that Dealer's room was like a TARDIS), running into furries I may/may not have known while in a seeming hurry all con to find/get in touch with certain people (you know who you are, apologies on skipping out), or possibly spend time with, only to pull the usual "30 second small talk greeting then walk away", followed by awkward silence of seeing who else is around and random marfing.
This may also have had to do with the splitting of rooms for size, which kinda detracted the sense of 'unity' the past years had, but is kinda understandable due to the titanic con growth.
On the flip side, it was a delight to see furs I'd never imagine meeting before, and interacting with those I'd otherwise never get a chance, as well as spending time with those I rarely get the chance to. It was at this point I truly realized the unique diversity that comes with furries. Also, go karts are fun, and I fail at bowling (usual). Parties, while they were for the most part a fun highlight until their shutdown, were a mixed bag . I drank light for the most part should...things happen, and, well... the aforementioned in terms of socializing (of which I will not dwell on further publicly). But, still great to be able to finally attend such festivities (wooooo).
Most of the time, and moreso towards the end of days, however, I had began to feel severe burnout of furries. Like, just, severe over exposure to talking animals that I'd just rather crawl up into the room and write/draw solo (which I actually did on Saturday night after the post-party mayhem).
The ride to the con was personally unique. I traveled with a couple of furs in an RV helmed by a collie. Leaving around noon, briefly experiencing some heavy rain to the tune of Ylvis, going through a familiar central valley and into the Sierras with a light Donner drizzle, the fellow co-riders certainly helped make what would've otherwise been a long 4-hour trip go by rather quickly, if not entertaining. On the way back, however, to put it lightly, I don't think doing a trip home on purely land-based public transit, complete with navigating San Francisco during rush hour, forgetting of such and said plan taking over 12 hours, was such a wise idea.
Props and much appreciation to (among many, many others)...
As for future cons... I'm at the point of wanting to focus on getting life on track and college/career resorted out and dealt with beforehand. I want to do MWFF and TFF (blame hyenas), but up in air at the moment and kinda wait and see. I'd rather go to a con that's in a place worth visiting than spend an entire weekend solely within a hotel, to be honest.... or we shall see... c'est la vie.
Stop growing BLFC, you're a marfing mammoth.... but I still love ya and will seeya again next year

- My roommates, Hornet and Jake, who have been friendly, and good humored. I am glad to have met and get to have known them over the weekend.
- Oreo Collie for being the leader and driver of the caravan to con and co-riders for the journey for company and building up anticipation.
- Spalding for putting up with me and the long journey back home.
- Palomino because I say neigh.
- Fraddas and Lakota for rawrs.
- Roman Otter and Cannon for channeling my inner Lutrae
- Stoic Wolf because ottersBrometheus Bear Buddy the Husky because viva la resistance!
- Tyco and all related staff for managing to pull off such a great con; seriously this couldn't have been done without y'all, and I really appreciate what you've done. Keep it up!
- And everyone else I've crossed paths with this con because there's far, far, too many to list who have, in some way or another, help shed some positive light

February Project Housekeeping
A new year, a new month, time to reflect on several creative works on my hand and where I'm planning to go with them.
It has been a good 8 months since I last updated Valleydog for variety of reasons, largely involving an attempt at readapting the comic for animation under Project CanisVulpes (and naively a whole series in the course of two months in the name of ambition). Said two months has, for a variety of real life reasons, morphed into over six months since, reasons thereof will be henceforth mentioned. The alternative would be to resume working on the comic in the usual routine schedule (or post as I finish like I did with Elevations Experimentations), or just bury the comic altogether in the past. Heck, Valleydog was designed to end this year had I stayed on schedule.
The main issue I have with Valleydog is that while I do have a connection to the characters, while there is strong potential for humor, while I do have storylines planned out, with a major reveal onto Francis' past, it's just the setting - a charter high school - and moreso when rebooting to 10th grade, that I simply drains any believable writing and emotional connection.
Granted, I could bump the ages to college and have the main cast go through the trials of such. However, specific storylines, jokes, and overall plots/backstories rely so heavily on the setting that I can't simply do such without a complete and utter redo of the premise until it's name and species only.
I have set forth a plan of action for Project CanisVulpes. Whether or not I'm able to follow through with this is of my own personal responsibility, if I choose to go forth wish such:
So far, I'm in the midst of step 1, and have been since August. Two scripts were written, and both I'm in the process of rewriting due to lukewarm response and weak storytelling. Over the course of the month, variousl emotional and personal life events happened which caused me to really question despite my determination the true worth of continuing, or if I should just give up (which, in all honesty, the main reason I'm still holding onto Valleydog is simply because I've never seen a project the whole way through; always jumping and/or leaving unfinished for something else). This brought a bit of paralysis, as well as continuously rewriting the pilot to be workable (only managing to get an actual plot beyond "here's the characters, welcome Francis" late December). Script 1 is 1/4 done, with the remaining 5 in various states of incompletion. When working with dialogue, and making it work, it is surprising how time consuming this really is, which, coming from one who wants to just get the story moving, is rather irritating - if you rush, it shows.
It's also February, and I need to pick up the pace. I'd love to have someone help me in writing, but I haven't finished a pitch/story bible to aid in such yet... I guess guidelines to volunteers?
Moving on to Elevations, an idea that has been brewing in my head since I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area three years ago, things have been moving along at a much quicker scale. I'd like to owe this to the fact that the storyline is, overall, a lot more personally relevant based on the experience I've had so far, allowing for more character development and plotlines that otherwise would not be feasible in a sheltered high school setting.
Plus, actually dividing the planned story up into segments (four volumes of four/five chapters... 16-20 in total for the story) helps a lot. I feel more free in writing this as I'm not confined to a high school based on real (though now cloudy) memories, and instead taking elements around me (like making a major local landmark a serious plot point and having names like Nathan Judah and Juliet Church)... as well as practice into streamlining for wider audience (partly the point of the recent practice comic was to test how people engage to what elements, despite the mood not appropriately matching the final comic).
Main issue is that, as the storyline sits (which I don't want to give away much of), is that it'll turn into a very depressing and emotionally tolling one. Things will change over time, but the themes explored are... well, open to interpretation, and the main character will go through a lot.
I am looking forward to working on Elevations. I have characters more/less ironed out, as well as the overall plot point. I will be going up to San Francisco later in the month to do some field research into locations and gathering detail (thus avoiding GIS syndrome) as well as inspiration for later/potential elements to be integrated; getting a good feel of the city and its livelyhood outside of Cable cars and giant museum malls. I will be posting my own personal notes on my research on this blog, as well as concept art in the appropriate places.
Anywho, I hope you enjoy this early morning ramble. Thanks for reading, and if you have any more questions to ask, feel free to do so wherever personally convenient.
Hasta Marfle!
- Finish six scripts of the first six episodes already planned
- Recruit potential voices for a group read
- Pick and choose funniest/plot relevant scenes/lines
- Animate only those scenes/lines
- Use aforementioned animated clips as a crowdfunding teaser.
- Post such and prepare for crowdfunding (ie Kickstarter)
- Next steps follow as appropriate

Further Conventions - Part II
So I mentioned in a previous journal my thoughts on a recent furry convention, and all the fun therein.
Lemme continue this vanity for the future year, in ramble fashion.
When it comes to planning future cons for the year, at least when they're not a day trip away, I go take into account the following factors:
Anywho, my upcoming convention list goes as follows.
Nonetheless, hope this sates any potential leisure and social questions, and I appreciate you reading this piece of vanity.
Until next time,
Hasta Marfle!
Lemme continue this vanity for the future year, in ramble fashion.
When it comes to planning future cons for the year, at least when they're not a day trip away, I go take into account the following factors:
- Must be relatively easily to access without a car.
- Good consistent reputation across the fandom, hype notwithstanding.
- Sizable attendance and as cliquish as this sounds know several furs going beyond just an invite from one.
- Must not be within less than 2 months before/after a convention I'm already locked onto.
- (Important): It must be in a city that one would otherwise travel to on its own merits and not just for a weekend at a hotel.
Anywho, my upcoming convention list goes as follows.
- Biggest Little FurCon This is a given. I already have a room settled and tentative transport plans. All I need to do now is register like a good citizen. I may have something done in time by then; whatever may suit me. Also looking forward to the free attractions (swinging folf anyone?) for once, so yay only reason to go to Reno.
- Midwest Furfest (or Rainfurrest II, Medieval Boogaloo) I really wanna do MWFF, and have started some rainy day saving and casual preliminary planning. If anything, it's well timed to be a great potential Birthday con. Ideally wishful thinking (and based on previous discussion), this would involve a railtrip to Chicago (and granted a return flight a la RF), and maybe check out a bit of the city if can (perhaps see Wait Wait live). This is, of course, personally ambitious and would quite honestly (given how volatile it is as of late) depend on how my state of living midway thru this year.
I kinda wanna do Rainfurrest again, albeit abbreviated (Fri-Sun), but I'm also getting a been there, done that feeling. I'd return more for visiting Seattle than seeing furries, to be quite honest given how my experience there was essentially mainly running into local furs from the Bay (that I'd otherwise see in a regular meet and/or visit personally), how I enjoyed the train trip to the con more than then con itself, and didn't quite feel as unique save for a few moments (granted, this was also of my own wrongdoing, but enough rambling). This, of course, would also depend on things post-BLFC. - Further Confusion 2016 Duh
- Texas Furry Fiesta I blame hyenas. I actually wasn't even planning on going to this for above reasons (it fails two; why travel to a Dallas suburb?). Let's just say I was fairly convinced after a while, plus it seems to be fairly good. Plus, maybe wishful thinking to release Elevations I there? One can dream (or set as goal) :)
- Furry Weekend Atlanta Like Texas... I guess I don't really see myself traveling to the South? I have gotten a fair amount of asks in regards to this to some extent, plus I know of a fair amount of furs going here that I otherwise won't see. It isn't that high on my list, but it's there as a consideration.
- Oklacon or Campfire Tails Because camping.
- Anthrocon I see this as the "tourist trap of the fandom"; you go to it just for sake of going there because it's size and notability. It's like a kid going to Disney World. That said, there's no way I'd travel to Pittsburgh just for a crowded weekend of animals (and the city itself isn't worth visiting on its own), so any plan of doing AC would involve having it be the end of a trip along the east coast (Ideally Start at DC for a few days, go to Philadelphia for a few more, then finish off with AC). Until I can reasonably and responsibly do such, any chance of visiting Anthrocon will be on hold (unless I somehow become GoH, pretty please?).
Nonetheless, hope this sates any potential leisure and social questions, and I appreciate you reading this piece of vanity.
Until next time,
Hasta Marfle!
